Since my exodus back to Michigan, my first job has been going back to church. Who knew one could be a professional church choir singer! It's been a lovely experience, and truly strange to come back to the Sunday morning scene.
I was very involved in church, having gone since I was very little. I attended services at least twice a week at the parochial school I went to. After nestled safe and sheltered at a Missouri Lutheran school for 12 years, I became confirmed. One day I listened with shock to a salty sermon telling who we should vote for, and how we as a community can overturn Roe vs. Wade. This quickly propelled me away from my weekly ritual. Since then I searched and searched to gain back some semblance of spirituality, from live music, to psychedelics, to theatre, to therapy, to meditation, to yoogaaaa.
Yoga. I thought my first Kirtan class was like church, but fun! My strong spirituality came back and I am so happy to be back in this game of life. In my journey I discovered how similar yoga and church are:
prayer = meditation
"the power of prayer" = the law of attraction
God outside = god within
repentance =meditation on forgiveness
"god bless" = "with metta"
witness and stewardship = karma yogaoffering = pricing ;)
got some more comparisions? add to the list!
PS- I have permission to use my beautiful friend Mila's yoga pic. The shapes are very telling. The church has hard angles, strong steady lines, pointing towards God in the sky. The Yoga pic is cyclical, the beginning is the end, the end the beginning. The circle of life, the body opening all the chakras to it.
